MULTIFEED_START_2_An Art with a Long HistoryMULTIFEED_END_2_

Batik is an art form that was first used in the Far East. The traditional method uses wax on cloth so that the areas with the wax resist dying. It was originally used in three main colors which were indigo, brown and white. Now all colors under the rainbow can be used and it is more than just for decorating clothes. It is also a method of painting. Many cultures have adapted the art of batik and use it in many different ways. In many places, women must dress in long, flowing dresses which are hand decorated in the batik method. The colors and intricate pattern on the dress will often dictate the status of the woman in the community. While this method of dying fabric has long been done by hand, there are now mechanical means for producing batik clothing much faster and at a lower cost. It is sure that this art will remain popular for years to come.
