No one in the western world seems to know anything about batik. I had an early exposure to it because my mother went to Indonesia when she was in the Peace Corp and we still have the colorful batik clothing she brought back with her many years ago. When I went to graduate school with the view to becoming a historian, I decided to write my dissertation on the evolution of batik clothing in Indonesian society. It went on to win several awards and drew some attention to this marvelously complex style of clothing. Batik is made by taking wax and making complicated patterns, symbols, and other signs on various fabrics. The Indonesians have been doing it for ages and it’s a difficult process to learn without direct assistance from someone familiar with the techniques. I’m convinced these batik indonesia fabrics could catch on here in a big way once people learn about them.
